Locking hatch with an extension cord passing through the metal wall of a pole barn

Locking Hatch for Carports, Pole Barns & Metal Buildings

A lockable pass-through for metal buildings.

Mount a locking hatch in the steel panels of an enclosed carport, pole barn, or metal garage to pass power cords, air lines, or hoses — without leaving a roll-up door cracked open. Also handy for a lockable access point to an outdoor outlet or water line.

Popular DIY Uses

  • Extension cord to an RV, boat, or vehicle parked outside
  • Air hose to inflate tires outside the barn
  • Water hose routing for livestock or wash-down
  • Engine-block heater or battery-tender cord

Which size? The Small door is the easy pick for cords and hoses. Use the Large door if you need room for plugs or reaching in.

Carports & Pole Barns — FAQ

How do I cut a hole in a ribbed metal building panel?

+

Mount on the flat section between ribs. Use a step bit for the starter hole, then a nibbler or jigsaw with a metal blade. Deburr the edges, bed the flange in butyl tape, and fasten with #8 × 3/4" self-tapping screws. Add a wood backer to the girt or behind the panel for a stiffer mount.

Which size should I buy?

+

Both rectangular doors use a 4-7/8" wide opening. The Small door needs a 5-1/8" tall opening; the Large door needs a 6" tall opening for a little more room to reach in or pass bulkier plugs and fittings. If you want more than one opening, the Small 2-Pack and 3-Pack are keyed alike.

What tools do I need?

+

A drill, a jigsaw or oscillating multi-tool (or a step bit and nibbler for sheet metal), a tape measure, exterior-grade sealant, and the right screws for your wall. Print our true-scale template so the cut lands exactly right.
